Forensic Science presentaion

Two forensic scientists came to our school today. They told us about how the process is done when they get evidence from a crime scene. First they took a look at a scene, if it is a big crime they will put on suits so they don't get their DNA on the evidence.  If the scene is small (eg. break into a house) they will go in and look for evidence such as foot prints, blood, saliva, ect, then they send the evidence to Wellington. Scientist's process it and it goes through the DNA database.

A process

What will happen when humans go extinct.

The earth has been around for 4.5 billion years. Humans have only called earth home for 200,000 years so it is safe to say that our planet thrived before us, and will thrive after we are gone.

This is what would happen if humans vanished.

After a few hours=

If humans vanished the world wouldn't take long to start feeling the effect. Just in the few hours there would be shocking changes that would change the world forever. Since most power stations around the world work on fossil fuels are controlled by human run power plants, The power around the world would stop. The world would almost go dark, but there would still be some power thanks to solar panels and windmills.

After a few days=

After 48 hours without human maintenance the solar panels and windmills that were still working would soon shut down and the world would be officially without power. House pets would start to starve and dehydrate from not being looked after by their humans and will die without the proper care, and dont have the skills to survive in the wild. The metro stations would flood because the pumps that keep them dry are run by humans.

After a few weeks=

Small designer dogs such as bulldogs and terriers would die because of their lack of physical advantages. Big dogs would start forming packs and hunt small animals. Domestic animals would also because a bigger foods sauce for the already wild animals. Within a few weeks animals in zoos and enclosures would soon be able to escape and become predators once again.

After a month.

Water that helps cool nuclear power plants will have evaporated causing nuclear explosions all around the world. Millions of animals will die from cancer caused by radiation from the expositions. Rivers and lakes will be flooded by sewage because of the power plants not working. The swage in the water would kill the animals that rely on the rivers and lakes for their ecosystems. Chemicals get released into the air, and natural gas Will start wildfires that last for days.

After a year=

After a year all the recycled rubbish like plastic and electronics would now be found in waterways and washed up on beaches. Larch constructions such as bridges, buildings, and the Eiffel tower would start collapsing due to corrosion.

After 25 years=

By now all the plants would of over grown And popular streets and cities will be cover will grass and trees. Cities will be riddled with wildlife. Some cities will go back to their natural environment and end up covered in sand from the desert. The animals now rule the world. All the cities of human existence would be gone except from a few stone structures.

10,000 years later=
Only pyramids, the great wall of china, and MT. Rushmore would still be standing.

Plastic would still be alive and will be for a hundred more years to come. Future aliens that come to our planet would be confused by the amount of plastic found in fossils.

Matahiwi Marae Trip

Matahiwi Marae Trip

5.9.17

Today my class and the whole year eights went to a marae where we learnt all about the paintings and statues in the different rooms and what there purpose is.

When we went inside the meeting room, where we had to take our shoes off, there were wooden carvings of gods attached to the wall and opposite them were there husband or wife. In that room we talked about the main god 'Maui'. He is the strongest and most powerful of them all. He is our role model as he always takes and chance and never gives up.

the Banded Kokopu

Sophia Smith
Banded Kokopu

Hey. Im sophia, and today the topic is about the small but magnificent Banded kokopu.

You can find this fish on the beds of rivers and streams mainly under large rocks. The locations that have said to be found  are mainly the Chatham and Rakiura island in the north part of new zealand.
The banded Kokopu is 20 cm as well as getting up to 25cm long. One of its best features are its snake skin pattern on its back although some of these fish have more of a leopard pattern and its belly is pale as well as its fins. Some that have been spotted are said to look like tiny eels.

Their Life cycle starts off as little eggs placed around plants which is in the estuary part of the water, then the eggs turn into Larvae which are in the deep part of the sea, then to whitebait which is placed in the Estuary part again, then turn into Banded Kokopu which swim in the fresh shallow water parts.
The Banded Kokopu feeds off insects that fall into the water. How they breath is by swallowing water then pump it over their gills.

The Banded Kokopu is one of our many stream creatures.
Do you want to help our insects and fish?
Do you want the Banded Kokopu to stay alive?
Do you want to help them in any way you can?
Do you?

1.Dish soap=This contains the chemical triclosan. This chemical can cause infertility, early puberty, and other hormone disorders in animals

2.Golf balls= they look like eggs and fish like eating them so they will eat the ball which is bad for there insides.

3.Medications= When you take a pill, the body breaks it down and gets absorbed into the bloodstream. Whatever parts aren’t absorbed into our blood gets converted into water soluble particles that get excreted in urine which goes into the sewage system. Anxiety, anti-depressants, and birth control pills have been found in nearly all public waters. This makes the fish act quite strange, as if they are on drugs them self.

One word.
Pollution!
We have rubbish bins for a reason!

Thankyou.

river recount

River Recount

Just another day, another bike ride. 2 years ago I was on my bike riding with one of my best friends (Pearl). We had just been playing at the park in Te Awanga and were heading back towards the campsite that my friend charlie’s grandpa owns. It was so cold that day, that I couldn't help tuck my fingers tightly away into the sleeves. We could hear the crashing waves beside us. We were planning on going to a hut that my dad showed me a couple of years ago. After all we were freezing, exhausted, and very much bored.

Over the small bridge to the sand, we hopped off our bikes. We pushed them up to a large ragged log lying on the ground as we realised that the river crossing right over into the sea. So we couldn't take them with us. The chance of them getting stolen obviously didn't occur to us (after all we were only year 5s)

We started to panic a little as we had no clue how we would cross. There seemed to be some teenage boys hanging on either side of the river which made this situation even worse. They could see that Pearl and I wanted to cross over and they were excited to see us try. For a second Pearl and I looked at each there and thought (are we really going to do this) But that didn't stop us! We took our sneakers and socks off and leaned them against the log. The river was so ruff it was terrifying. The motion of the river was in waves so when one past that would be the best time to run across.

3, 2, 1, go!! We ran down the slope into the freezing water. It was so hard to keep you balance as the fast water was pushing you to the side. We got around to the middle of the lake and we started to panick. We could see the next wave coming and we new we wouldn't make it to the other side in time for it to pass.
The teenage boys were staring and started to giggle.   Just before the wave hit us we tried to jump but we both slipped on the slippery rocks and fell to the ground drenched in our wet clothes. At that second of course the boys couldn't stop laughing. But we picked ourselves up and walked across to the other side, back onto the sand.
Shivering like a fly does when you spray it with fly killer, we fell to the sand. Looked at eachother with relief. Burst out laughing.

The End.

Ready For Braces

“Take a seat,” Said the dentist.
My tummy is a roller coaster constantly looping. I sit in the chair for the 50th time. The bright light blinds me. My mum close up to my chair. My sweaty hand clasps onto her hand. In the injection goes.

Sqeezing her hand I take a deep breath. 9 injections in total. Wiggling side to side, I moan a little.
Tugging, tugging, and pop, theirs the first tooth out. Only 3 more to go.Each corner was sore after, I could hardly eat. My gums, throat and lips were completely numb and would take four hours till normal again.

There was a lot of blood and a lot of tissues had been used because of the fact that they were adult teeth.  I couldn't eat, talk, or swallow and even today it hurts to eat.  In four weeks time i'll be back, another day of terrifying moments, walking out with braces.

Journal entry

Journal entry.
I push open the door, I take a deep breath, The look on the nurse's face wasn't good, my tummys a roller coaster looping constantly. I take a seat. Don looked up at me with such innocence. He leaned over to say something. “I'm a gonner Billy.” At that moment I thought back to all the times in the mines, then Don took another breath. “What about the strike,” he said. I sat and waited, remembering as he closed his eyes. It was an awful time in Waihi when my dad used to fight against the black leg. He tried to get some words out “I was a black leg.”
He confessed.
I didn't know what to do. I felt sick. Could I of been with a traitor all this time. And now I see that I wasted my time, I wasted my friendship, in the war. Although I didn't feel completely torn apart, it was like I was glad and relieved at the same time. The question I will always ask till the end is
“Was war really worth it?”
